Rebecca Hall’s AS IF Magazine cover story was conceived as a portrait of the artist behind the actor/director. I wanted to spotlight a quieter, longstanding part of her practice: her painting. Hall has used drawing and painting for years as a way to observe faces, build character, and translate emotion—an artistic language that runs parallel to her work on screen and stage. The visual concept evolved around letting her artwork lead. My role was to photograph Hall with restraint and precision, so the images complemented her paintings without mimicking or overpowering them. Guided by the rhythm of her brushstrokes—bold gestures against delicate lines—I developed a composed, contemplative photographic approach and hand-drawn overlays that connected canvas to portrait. The result is a contemplative visual language that frames Hall not only as a subject but as an artist revealing herself on her own terms.
