The collaboration between Julianne Moore and acclaimed contemporary artist Kara Walker brought together two distinct creative worlds. Moore's ability to inhabit psychologically complex characters found a compelling counterpart in Walker’s work, which confronts race, gender, sexuality, and systems of power through imagery rooted in the history of slavery and oppression. Moore and I, as two white women entering that world, understood the importance of approaching it with research, context, and sensitivity.
The creative concept emerged through Bellini’s Norma, which Walker had reinterpreted through the lens of colonial Congo. Using sections of Walker’s monumental mural to reconstruct the set, I photographed Moore as Norma within the artist’s reinterpretation, bringing the original character back into the narrative Walker had transformed.
The resulting photographs position Moore as a character within Walker's intricate world, preserving the distinct identities of both actress and artist while creating a visual language that could not have existed independently of their collaboration.
