Emily Sandberg in “Escape Artist”

For Escape Artist, I asked Emily Sandberg to approach the editorial as an exercise in character rather than performance. The shoot was constructed around a fictional figure—an elusive fashion enthusiast who leaves the city under ambiguous circumstances to live in isolation, accompanied only by a wardrobe that suggests a former life elsewhere. To extend the narrative, Emily wrote a diary from the character’s perspective, which appeared alongside the images in the printed edition of AS IF Magazine. Together, text and image function as a single work, using fashion as narrative evidence rather than display.
